A beautiful and complex story about fame, womanhood, queerness, and race. The characters around Evelyn Hugo feel complex and multi-dimensional.

I was not a big fan of the voice in Monique's POV, especially at the beginning, but don't let that put you off. Once Evelyn starts talking, the pages just fly by.

I have been disappointed by Tik tok recommendations too many times to count so I was vary if this one, but WOAH was it AMAZING. The storytelling/writing style was stellar, it was so real, I felt like I was reading about an actual person. There were so many years of her life to cover but it was done SO WELL. It had amazing representation specially for bisexuals and really made me understand what they go through. It kept me on my toes, had me shocked by the twists, and made me tear up. It was beautiful, riveting, and tragic. Loved every second of it and will be reading another one of her books. Highly recommend this masterpiece!!

I grappled a lot with the main character. I understand that she’s supposed to be flawed neither good or bad bc that’s how most people are. Everyone can be a bad guy. But idk she played everything her way and by her terms and I understand that she’s queer but she used everyone almost all the way until the end all because the character always gets her way. I can’t say that I love that. It just left me wanting more. I kept feeling like what else is there? It kept referencing that she’s a sexual Icon and idk it felt repetitive and obvious

Life of a biracial queer Hollywood star throughout their life.

*spoiler review*

It was really nice having so much bisexual representation and how frustrating it is when people assume about you.
I love Evelyn's calculating cunning and all she did to preserve her life and livelihood.

I'm really happy I had some education about that period of Hollywood thanks to Be Kind Rewind on YouTube, made it a little easier to understand some of the Hollywood politics of the time.

While Evelyn loved Celia, I didn't. I was just as frustrated as Evelyn in a lot of their big fights.
Harry was lovely, other than after John Harry...  NOT COOL HARRY

I really don't know how I feel about how race was brought into things? I'm definitely not an expert, and very white myself, but it stood out in a way that was clear it was not written by someone with experience. It stood out enough for me to explicitly comment on it.

I still really enjoyed the story from the queer perspective.

I'd seen this book everywhere on the internet and wasn't super interested, but as soon as I began I just didn't want to put it down. Each reveal was a surprise - whether joyful or tragic - and it's one of those books that I'm going to wait to read again so I can forget the details and discover it all over again. A sweet, tragic, calculated series of romances - or at least, PR relationships - with one beautiful, genuine love at the centre.
