This was an easy, partly enjoyable, partly emotional read.

The story itself was intriguing. I liked Evelyn’s boldness and assertiveness in doing what it takes to get what you want, even though she used people for her personal gain.

My favorite relationship was between
SpoilerHarry
and Evelyn. They were both supportive and caring toward another, and could relate to and trust each other.

On the other hand, the relationship between Evelyn and
SpoilerCelia
felt underdeveloped and lacking. I disliked
SpoilerCelia and thought she was immature (even as an older woman in the middle of the book) and annoying. Considering she’s Evelyn’s love of her life, Celia was toxic to her.

While Evelyn is Cuban-American, the Latin-American representation in this book is not great. Her heritage is addressed shallowly. The characters are also stereotypical (such as the other Latina in the story being her maid).

Additionally, the writing felt…clinical? I probably would’ve felt more emotionally connected with the story if the writing were more fluid.

So the book didn’t live up to the hype for me. Despite its shortcomings, it was worth the read.

Oh my god where to even start with this. This was the first book I’ve read all year so far due to a book slump & oh man did it rip me out of it. I didn’t realize how close I had gotten to these characters honestly & yes I weeped so hard at the end. Truly magnificent.

What an absolutely beautifully written and absolutely heartbreaking story. I love the way that Taylor Jenkins Reid plays with the narrative structure in her books, and this one is no exception.

The story is told through the “lens” of a journalist who is given the opportunity to write a tell-all biography of one of Hollywood’s elite A-list celebrities, Evelyn Hugo. As the story progresses, you see chapters of this fictional book intermixed with the story of the journalist and her own daily struggles. It’s compelling and fresh and absolutely delectable writing.

As for Evelyn Hugo, I’m always going to root for a main character who is a strong woman with a clear sense of purpose and point of view. And she fits that mold. I love that this is a story of realistic bisexual feeling and the everlasting love between two people who, in the time period, could not always share themselves honestly.

Absolutely breathtaking. And gut wrenching. But so beautifully executed.

Because I picked this book unaware, and I worry others might too, I think it’s so important to put this out into the world: this book grossly glorifies suicide.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid is a novel that is a retrospective of the life and loves of an aging Hollywood icon who is telling her story to a young and unknown magazine reporter Monique.

I enjoyed this book with its flowing written style, sections relating to each of her seven spouses and their stories and interspersed with magazine clippings that moved the narrative along. You could read between the lines and see many symmetries to many stars through the decades such as Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson and Natalie Wood to name but a few in this tale of ruthless ambition, treasured friendships, complicated families, the cost of fame and ultimately being true to yourself and those you love and love you just as much.
