This book hits home. I was one of those smiling workers that helped people paint with their curled up hands. It was for the parents. We asked ourselves the same questions. I was saddened and uplifted by this story! Martin writes so well and with descriptions that make it so vivid. I love his brutal honesty. Read this because you will not regret it.

Wow - this story was heartbreaking, emotional, and ultimately inspirational. I had no idea that someone could be trapped inside their own body like that. Absolutely frightening but wow - what a story of perseverance...

Indrukwekkende beschrijving hoe Martin Pistorius, gevangen in het z.g. locked-in syndroom, zijn leven ervoer nadat hij vanaf zijn 16e - na twee jaar coma - zijn bewustzijn herkreeg maar zich op geen enkele manier kon uiten doordat geen van de verzorgers, artsen of wie dan ook zijn minieme signalen opmerkte en hij werd beschouwd als een 'imbeciel' met een IQ lager dan 30. Martin beschrijft hoe hij tijdens de lange jaren van volledig isolement liefde om zich heen zag, maar ook hoe wreed enkele verzorgers waren door hem uit te schelden, hem haastig te heet eten in zijn mond forceerden en hem dwongen te slikken, hem te ruw behandelden en zelfs hoe hij lichamelijk en seksueel werd misbruikt.
Na vele jaren in de zorginstelling werd tenslotte iemand aangesteld die wél de indruk kreeg dat Martin reageerde op wat ze zei of vroeg. Op haar initiatief en na overleg met Martins ouders werd getest of hij zou kunnen leren op een alternatieve manier te communiceren. Dit betekende voor Martin de start van een bevrijding uit zijn isolement..

Memoir of a man with “locked in syndrome” quite an emotional story of how parents and medical professionals with best intentions can miss changes. Some terrible parts on the abuses going on in care homes.

This isn't the most expertly written book, but the insight into self and others, along with the insight imparted to the reader into the abuses the most vulnerable people in our society face are devastating and fascinating in equal measure. Martin Pistorious is strong willed, compassionate and passionate and the strength it must have taken to write so fully and honestly about his experiences is to be praised in bucket loads.
