For me it was a bit to slow, but it is a beautiful depiction of how life was at the time (because you now jane Austin lifed then and al).

Ok, ok, ok. Those of you who know me know that this is NOT my first time reading this book! Or the second or probably the third or maybe even the fourth??? (Honestly not sure how many times I’ve read P&P.) This read through was motivated by a podcast - Hot and Bothered. I haven’t listened to the other seasons of the podcast (maybe I will at some point) but their most recent season is “Live from Pemberly” and each episode takes a close look at a few chapters of P&P. I really enjoyed learning some more of the history, both of the time and of Austen herself.

I’m really loving the podcast + book club format. Aside from Hot and Bothered, I’m also listening to podcasts reading through Dracula and the Percy Jackson series, along with Sword and Laser (which is a more traditional book club format picking one book a month to read). Does anyone else like these? Have any suggestions for ones I should try???

What else is there to say about Pride and Prejudice? If you haven’t read it, you really should. It is always and forever 5 stars

Jane Austen's famous novel Pride and Prejudice takes a deep dive into the author's contemporary world, providing both scathing wit and social commentary on the lives of the gentry. The Bennet sisters are in serious straits: as they are girls they cannot inherit the property they live in, which is entailed to an unlikeable cousin. As neither of their parents have a sense of economy, there is hardly any money going to the sisters either when the father dies.

Then, the nouveau riche Charles Bingley moves into the area, causing a stir as he dances with the eldest Bennet girl not once, but twice. His friend, the chilly and reserved Mr. Darcy, disapproves of the match, seeing that the Bennets are not of the upper echelons of the gentry, unlike him. Despite himself, Mr. Darcy cannot help but take an interest in the second eldest Bennet girl Elizabeth.

This book with its lively characters that seem to pop right out of the page deserves to be read out loud (esp the dialogue) to be enjoyed fully. A classic, does not disappoint.

This was definitely a challenge to my English-reading level - which is quite obvious for the time it took me to read it ;) but oh-so-worth-it. I wasn't expecting it to be that funny, actually - and I'm also grateful that I "waited" long enough to read it that I was able to enjoy it (because I'm pretty sure the "funny" would have flown a few miles above my head 20 years ago :P )
