Incredible story, the short story at the end shocked me though. I've read the call of the wild before but not batard, and it was intense but very well written.

I hated this book.  So much violence, especially against dogs.

I couldn't remember if I'd read this one or White Fang when I was younger, but it must have been White Fang because all of this was new to me.

It reminded me in many ways of Black Beauty, which I absolutely adored. It shows the kindness, cruelty, and ineptitude of people from the animal's perspective. It makes you feel so strongly while reading, about both good and bad characters.

While Black Beauty eventually found love in a peaceful home, Buck takes the opposite approach and fully embraces his wild dog side. Both end up in their happiest state, and both books really make you feel and root for each animal. This one feels like more of a product of its time than Black Beauty, but I still enjoyed it.
