I couldn't remember if I'd read this one or White Fang when I was younger, but it must have been White Fang because all of this was new to me.

It reminded me in many ways of Black Beauty, which I absolutely adored. It shows the kindness, cruelty, and ineptitude of people from the animal's perspective. It makes you feel so strongly while reading, about both good and bad characters.

While Black Beauty eventually found love in a peaceful home, Buck takes the opposite approach and fully embraces his wild dog side. Both end up in their happiest state, and both books really make you feel and root for each animal. This one feels like more of a product of its time than Black Beauty, but I still enjoyed it.

I do not understand how this book is beloved. Am I missing something? It's full of racist, violent content that serves no other purpose than to say "the dog turned to its wolf roots". Cool? What's the comment on it, why should we care? It's boring but skimmable and I only bothered finishing it because it was short, hoping that I'd discover some profound idea hidden in the nonsense. I did not. I actively did not like this book, not even the writing could make up for it. Not worth the time to read.

I have waited ages to read any Jack London. Not because of any objection or qualm, but simply because of the two boys in my elementary/middle school who traded between Call of the Wild and White Fang for every book report for years (no teacher ever caught on, I guess). Because of this, I have always (unfairly) assumed London’s work to be basic and boring.

Not so.

The Call of the Wild has proved fascinating in its examination of the “primitive” and “wild” in contrast with the “civilized” life accessible only to those in genial, temperate climates. I have been encouraging my seventh graders to consider the true nature of animals vs. people, to assess London’s views on the “primitive” elements in both, and to consider what implications this might hold for us today.

I await their final thoughts with anticipation.

This book is short but I found it a little more challenging from the writing style for my personal reasons. I might have enjoyed this more in a different mind set since it was a little harder for me to to stay focused and keep what was going on being that it was audio.

Some books I find are better for me if I read the printed word to understand since listening is harder to take in at times. I find myself having to repeat parts over and over again losing a little of the magic of the book at times and wanting to drop the book.

But what I did get I liked and the movie with Harrison Ford did well to help me keep track what was going on when I found myself in spots that I would space on. This does have more details on the events after the movie and between, of course.

This is written in the dog's point of view and how he sees the world, how he feels and his adventures.

The world London makes is real and at times sad, there are possible triggers for people like Animal abuse, but he balances it out with kindness. Showing the dark side of the world to an animal and the best sides. The call of the wild to the young pup is ever present, like a reminder that no matter how we treat them good or bad animals still have instincts of the wild, it is who they are. They can love their owners or hate them but at the end of the day their is the ever present call of the wild in them.
