A thinly veiled metaphor for COVID lockdowns, a family is forced to stay inside due to a storm. The family (a single father and his three children) have to deal with the boredom and interpersonal conflict that comes with being cooped up together.

A book highlighting a single dad is a rarity. A family that struggles for so many reasons (temper tantrums, missing a seemingly deceased mother, a parent who remembers his children as babies) these are complex issues within this book. For that reason, I do not see children loving it. It is a book that requires explanation to the audience.

But once again, the illustrations are the impactful medium. Making it, in my opinion, another book that I could see on Caldecott shortlists.

A story about covid-19, without saying covid or pandemic. Kids today will understand the feelings within the story.

A story about the pandemic without once mentioning covid-19 or even masks. Well done with a beautiful message about families.

This powerful picture book shows a single dad and his three children struggling with life and each other while they are confined to their home during a storm. The vivid illustrations convey emotion very well, and I appreciate how the story relates to people's experiences in COVID-19 lockdown without referring to the pandemic itself. It was refreshing to see these experiences presented in a different light, and this will keep the book from becoming dated.

A great story to use in relation to the pandemic. There was a storm that caused everyone to stay inside. The family in the book struggles with all the time they have stuck indoors together. At the end they learn how to work together as a family.

An apt metaphor for the COVID-19 pandemic, "The Longest Storm" tells the story of a single dad and his three kids, weathering a storm together that seems to last forever.
