After buying "A Garden of Vipers" in 2006 I found out that it was actually the third of a series. "The Hundredth Man" is the first, and it was amazing. Carson Rider is a quirky police detective who does his best thinking laying down in the back seat of the squad car. He is handsome, charming, and haunted by a gruesome family history. The story was impossible to put down. Great book for those who enjoyed the Hannibal Lechter series.

I both liked and really disliked this book! Good mystery, especially at the beginning, but the plot and characters started to fall apart a little in the middle.

Not the best Carson Ryder I've read, but they definately get better as the series goes on so I'm glad I got around to reading the one that started it all!

A new unit dedicated to psychotic crimes is looking into a case where nonsensical inscriptions are written on the bodies. Carson Ryder ends up going to his imprisoned serial killer brother for help.
I found this on my shelves and had no prescribed ideas as to how it would be. I did end up enjoying it quite a bit. Carson Ryder is a bit of an egotistical guy but he grew on me. And I can see the potential for his growth as a character further into the series. The crime is a good one that kept me guessing and the scenes and descriptions were a good bit gross. I plan on reading more of the series.

This is an example of a book that I simply could not get into because of the author's writing style. I don't know what it was, but it seemed fragmented, choppy, with a lot of nicknames on the front end and with poor character development. It was hard to figure out what I was reading, who were talking to one another, and where they were at.
To put it simply, this is a horribly written book. Not for everyone I suppose.

3.5/5 stars. I found the story engaging, and I liked the characters. However, I felt Kerley's portrayal of alcoholism was weak and unbelievable. Since it didn't really add anything to the story, I think the book would have been stronger without it.

This is the first book in the carson ryder series and I found it a good start. Quick and easy to read with just the right amount of action and intrigue. Unfortunately, the killer did not come as a surprise to me which was a shame!

I wanted to like this series. This is the first book and was too slow for too much of it then there were parts I didn't like. Haven't decided if I'll try the next yet.
