Rockettes • Radio City Music Hall • 1956 NYC • Historical fiction • 3.5 Stars

“The Spectacular” by Fiona Davis is a captivating novel set amongst and glitz and mystique of Radio City Music Hall during its mid-century heyday. As girls try out for a coveted position on the stage, the city is reeling from a series are of bombings. orchestrated by the “Big Apple Bomber”. In desperation, the police turn to a young doctor named Peter Griggs, who employs a radical new technique: psychological profiling. This is a unforgettable and important era in American and Theater history. As as always, Fiona Davis, gives us a story with lively characters and a story that you can’t put down.

Not my absolute favorite Fiona Davis novel but I enjoyed it nonetheless. It doesn't follow the same format as her other NY-based novels (time jumping/two sets of characters) but it still worked. The stakes were even a bit higher in this book than they have been in the others, and it added to the emotion. This is a solid 3 stars if I've ever seen one. I recommend but won't reread.

I knew immediately after reading Magnolia Palace that I would be a big fan of Fiona Davis and this book just cemented that thought. I love her story telling. This one was fantastic. Historic, emotional, glitzy, and even a bit suspenseful. It took a true piece of history I never even knew about and made it seem so real, even if it was fiction. I loved it a lot! I have a few of her older books in my shelves and I can’t wait to read them. If you’re a lover of HF, and honestly even if you aren’t, I recommend you check out this one or Magnolia Palace. Davis sucks you in and gives characters you grow attached to.

Magnolia Palace: ★★★★★
