My Thoughts:
What an emotional roller-coaster, I didn't expect to read about a whirlwind of insecurities, all that history wrapped up in one book. Had me hooked from the word go. Their unexpected meeting and although having not known each other long they head off on a road trip not knowing that by the end they would have emptied their baggage and be head over heels in love!

I loved all the characters, O'Brien developed them beautifully throughout the chapters, 2 completely different personality's a red headed geek in an atari t-shirt and a cop with hard a$$ attitude who both happen to end up in this whirl wind romance.

Oh and dont get me started on those steamy scenes whoa . O'Brien can seriously write a good thing or two! I can't wait to read what she writes next if its as good as this then its definitely on my TBR list!

This is my favourite Lesbian fiction to date, you definately have to check this one out!

3.5, rounding up.

This story is more character-driven than plot-driven, with both characters figuring out how to deal with their own issues as well as navigate being in a relationship, which is something neither of them are familiar with. Mel is tough and independent with a lot of insecurities stemming from her childhood years and family, while Regan is soft and nerdy and smart and was made fun of a lot as a kid. The falling in love happens pretty quickly, and the rest of the book has a lot of discussions and thinking, especially for Mel; she's used to sleeping with women and leaving, so having someone care about her is new and slightly terrifying. A lot of the things Mel deals with are things I heavily relate to, so it was great but also weird to see my own insecurities and issues on paper (Mel is far more likeable than I am, though). There's a road trip for a large chunk of this, but Mel and Regan are already together when they leave, so there's not really any fun road trip trope scenes. The sex scenes are pretty good, the dialogue and discussions feel realistic, though Regan uses pet names every damn time she talks, which got to be annoying after a while. A good 90% of her conversations with Mel involved a "baby" or "honey" multiple times on a page. And O'Brien uses "lover" most of the time instead of "girlfriend" or "partner," which I'm fine with as a noun but it felt repetitive and I would have liked O'Brien to just change up the word once in a while.

This was published in 2005, so keep that in mind if you read this---the r word is used at least once, and some of the conversations do feel very 2005. I liked this more than Camp Rewind, and I'll probably pick up another O'Brien book at some point.

I love this book. It’s not flawless or anything like that but I love it. I find it to be a very enjoyable read and I’ve read it multiple times.
The majority of the book takes place while the two main characters are on a road trip together. During this time, they make various stops to see different things and people. It’s a literal journey and during the trip the two of them develop and make their own personal journeys as well.
I love the banter and conversations between Mel and Regan. The dialogue often felt authentic and genuine. It was sweet and funny at times and I loved to read it. The relationship between the two is rushed, no doubting that, but only at the beginning. The instant attraction and Mel instantly wanting to be with Regan despite her previous strumpethood (yes strumpet is a word used in the book to describe Mel).
The characters in this book felt real. I’m not just talking about the main characters but the side characters they meet throughout the story. Mel’s gruff partner, both character’s parents, the people they meet on the campground. The characters felt, even if they were only there for a second, like actual people. No one felt forced in or like they were there just for a punchline or awkward conversation.
Mel and Regan are both characters with flaws and insecurities and they begin to work on them together during this trip. They even work on their issues and relationships with other people as well. It’s honest and endearing. Neither of them had a good past but the two, after some initial rough patches, begin to talk about their issues. The two actually talk to each other about their past and the pain that their experiences have caused them, and the other partner lends them a hand and supports them as they make changes or just talk things through.
This book is one of my favorites and I recommend it. I love the characters and the dialogue and the fact that problems are discussed. I like that the author made both characters flawed but also made them characters that you could root for and want to see get better.

How can you resist a romance with a computer geek as one of the main characters?

A good lazy summer's day book - a bit sappy, a bit geeky, a whilwind romance, some steamy scenes and definitely a "love conquers all" theme.
