I'll get the deduction out of the way first, I'm not normally someone to hate on HP references (I used to be the opposite), but there really were just too many in this book.

Okay now that aside this book was 🔥🔥🔥 I can absolutely see why it's been banned and challenged so much, and it's absolutely one that NEEDS to be read. I wish I would've read it as a young adult because it would've been wildly eye opening. I also think there are a lot of people who would see themselves in many of the characters.

i won't lie, i HATE reading a digital book so my reading experience was somewhat different than i would have liked it to be but this book is, was, and will continue to be incredibly powerful! i will always always always value an honest depiction of race and what it feels like to be a black girl in a pwi and the plight of starr and khalil is so emotional i just felt so connected to the book

The author does a great job of bringing her characters to life by their little mannerisms. I've not read many books where the characters felt so real.
