Another great book by Brian Freeman. This time I've learned to not assume the guilty party is who everything thinks is guilty. As usual you learn what really happened towards the end of the book as pieces of the puzzle start coming together.

I'd highly recommend all of his books!

BEST so far! So many twists and unexpected events I could not put it down! Brian Freeman is an amazing storyteller giving you enough details to let your imagination place you in the moment! Exhilarating-- did not know I was holding my breath until I exhaled.

The night teenage Jonathan Stride first had sex with his future wife Cindy, her sister Laura was brutally murdered. Thirty-five years later Cindy is dead of cancer, and Laura's best friend, now a writer, has come back to town looking for answers about the murder. Stride, now a detective, finds himself drawn into her search. This was a well-written, suspenseful novel that kept me guessing about the identity of the killer until the end, although other things were more easily figured out.

If you have read Brian Freeman's previous novels, they all follow Detective Jonathan Stride. This book tells the story of why Stride became a cop by going back into Stride's past to solve the decades old murder of his dead wife's sister.

Not sure Stride falling 100 feet off a bridge into icy water would be a survivable event. Stride did break his leg but which one is up for debate since the book said he broke one leg but the cast was on the other on the next page.

The is the fourth in suspense/thriller series that features Jonathan Stride, a homicide detective in Duluth, Minnesota. This was a quick and compelling read and kept me interested to learn the outcome. Try these if you like suspense writers such as Karin Slaughter, Patricia Cornwell, and Michael Connelly and I recommend you read these in order (Immoral, Stripped, and Stalked).

Another riveting Stride mystery. A case from Stride's high school years involving his dead wife's sister's murder that was never solved. An old classmate comes to town writing a book about the unsolved murder and provides evidence and clues that may or may not help the cold case. Revisiting his past, Stride is plunged into murder, deceit, unanswered questions about his late wife, old resentments, and crooked colleagues. He & Maggie work to untangle the webs that have been cast for so many years while Serena is seemingly working with the enemy. Trying to piece the past and present together draws out a murderer, a stalker, & new suspects that throw Stride off his game.

Spoiler SISTERS???? THEY WERE SISTERS????

While I did guess who the murderer was about two thirds into the book, I absolutely devoured the last chapters. It's a bit slow in the beginning, as the story is slowly being built, but when all of the little pieces of the puzzle start connecting? /that/ one lady gaga meme
The mysterious/suspense factor is VERY WELL done, it keeps you on the edge until the very last second.
Only reason I'm not giving it five stars is that I guessed who the culprit was way too soon. I prefer it when books inside this genre keep you guessing until the very end (yes, I'm looking at you Gillian Flynn).

Book 4 - Jonathan Stride series

Review:
In book 4 we are taken back to Jonathan's past, on a fatal night where the sister to Jonathan's girlfriend is murdered in cold blood, no one was arrested and the case went cold, which has haunted Jonathan for the past 30 years.
As the case is reopened we follow Jonathan as he tracks down the clues to catch the killer once and for all.

This book was a wild ride let me tell you, I liked how we got an insight to Jonathan's past and we got to know his late wife more. This story is very dark, we have characters who were badly abused and reading about their abuse even made my stomach knot. And that ending, I felt like it had ended nicely and then was blindsided by that little twist at the end which left me feeling a little uncomfy.
As always Freeman writes a dark and gripping storyline however the character writing, even though its a little better than the previous books, it still is not the best .

This book covers a wide range of heavy topics, from attempted rape, suicide, stalking, drug and alcohol abuse, sexual abuse, we also have a character who has an intellectual disability, however I was disappointed how casually the word 'Retard' was used. It would just make me cringe every time I read it.
