Re-read 23.05.2018: Evanjalin ist ja so ein typischer Fall von special snowflake, die wird viel zu sehr gehypt und hat anscheinend keine schlechten Seiten. Das ist doch nicht realistisch!

Tolles Buch, tolle Geschichte.

I only read he first hundred pages of this book. I had read a lot of good things about this book and was exited to read it. I quit reading because I found the characters intolerable. Especially the protagonist, Finnikin. The plot is very interesting, so I wish I could tolerate the characters, but unfortunately not.

like my dear friend sassers, i often do poorly with fantasy novels requiring a map of all the involved made-up countries. the beginning of 'finnikin of the rock' overwhelmed me with the number of countries (surely they were not all necessary?) mentioned as we set the scene. i dozed off a few times in the first 70 pages, and considered putting the book aside. but i just couldn't believe that melina marchetta would write a bad book, and i soldiered bravely on. by the halfway point, i was hooked; a bit later i was cheering. when i read the last page, i flipped back to the beginning and started all over. it's a pit of a ponderous read, this one, but definitely worth the effort.

Forget the damsel in distress. Hello to a story as much about being in exil as it is about the fantasy quest. It gave an extra layer to this story.

I was very iffy about this book when I first started reading and for the first 10% I just could NOT get into it for whatever reason. Not sure what the reason was..formatting on my kindle? The way the world was introduced? WHO KNOWS! I was tempted to even abandon it for the time being and perhaps come back to the book later. But once I hit about 100 pages in.. VROOOOOOOMMMMM!!! The book just took off and I could not put it down until I was done.

While I'm not going ga-ga and googly eyed over this book like some are, I definitely like this book enough to give it a solid 5 stars. I tend to like epic journey fantasy novels so this one was just perfect for me. Evanjalin was definitely a surprise and one of my favorite characters. Plot twists were good and the pacing of them and the book in general made the book easy to read.
