This book is described as historical fiction, told from one character's point of view before and during WWII and from another character's point of view in the years after the war. Ok, dual timelines are pretty common in historical fiction. The blurb mentioned a family secret that could save them, so maybe this was going to be more interesting. No. This "family secret" deviated into the fantasy genre, of which I am not a fan, and which I felt did not fit with the storyline at all. Sure, it would have been amazing had this been a solution for so many, but it wasn't. I kept reading to see how things played out and the ending was even more frustrating because that fantasy element was not even necessary to the resolution. I wouldn't even call it the happy ending I hoped for after all that time. Take out the "family secret" and it could have been a better story taken in a different direction.
