This was a nice story, I wasn't the biggest fan of a main character with PTSS because he had a lot of flashbacks to the time in the warzone. But it was relevant for the story so I understand why the writer put it in. The characters were nice, and eventhough the beginning was a bit slow I read this book pretty fast and was invested in the story. The second part was better and the book knew to surprise me a few times, especially the ending. Even with not many characters the book know how to keep you guessing how everything is linked together.

Spoiler Alex is being framed by the father of Cori, he helt him accountable for the suicide of his daughter. Alex and Cori were going to commit suicide together but when they were at the roof Emily, the girlfriend of Alex saw them and he pushed Alex of the ledge, with that push she made Cori fall and killed her. This was seen by Will, a friend of Alex and Will started to blackmail Emily in giving him prescriptions for drugs otherwise he would tell the police that Alex shoved Cori. To protect Alex, Emily agreed and ended up in this big drug scheme. Later Emily was kidnapped to hurt Alex, but Detective Sheryn Sterling found her in time and figured out that Emily was blackmailed and played a part in the death of Cori. Sheryn Sterling had her eyes on Alex the whole time and was blind for other possibilities and suspects. After a while she saw the mistakes she made and realised it was not Alex who was behind all this. Together with Alex she made a case against Will who ended up in prison. Alex and Emily left to work in a refugee center.

A good solid read

It was a good solid read. It gave the reader what they want, an interesting story with twists and turns. It kept me interested without being too obvious or too boring.

This was an Amazon First Reads. I tend to think worse of books I read on my phone as opposed to hard copies- for some subconscious reason. But this was actually a good one. The conclusion wasn’t a crazy never-saw-that-coming series of events but the author gives you enough suspects and red herrings to keep you unsure of what really happened. Two little nit-picky annoyances that should not influence whether or not you read the book but of which I felt compelled to report are: the overuse of the word ‘fugue’ and the overused description of the dog’s ‘red leash’. But hey at least I know what ‘fugue’ means now!

I really enjoyed this book. It starts out with you believing that the “bad guy” is one character and then there are many twists in the story. I got all wrapped in him being the one who “did it”. But the more you read, the more secrets are uncovered. So many shockers into Emilys past! In the end it is a surprise how it ends for sure. I really enjoyed it!

Is Alex a monster? Did he kill Emily?

One Small Sacrifice by Hilary Davidson is an exceptional mystery with plot twist and secrets everywhere. I was mesmerized by the details of the characters’ lives and how far they would each go to get what they wanted. The compassion, hatred, broken, jealousy that I felt from the characters was so thoughtfully written that I was engrossed in the story.

There are multiple points-of-view throughout the story. However, I will talk about the two main characters.

Sheryn Sterling,

Sheryn is a New York City Detective, wife, and mother. She is full of pride and also compassion. Detective Sterling doesn’t like to leave cases unsolved, and a year ago she had to walk away from a man named Alex Traynor, whom she believes killed a woman. I really liked Sheryn and her family. She is such a fabulous character, and I felt like she and I could be terrific friends. Well, if she weren’t working all the time.

The thing about Sheryn is that she will admit if she is wrong. I felt like her integrity is held at a high level. She wants justice, but she wants it to get it the right way, no cutting corners. Sheryn has a way of making people trust her, or they could just be scared of her. Either way, I like her.

Alex Traynor

Alex is the most broken character that I have read in a long time. His PSTD is tragic, I felt so sorry for him, and yet, I completely believed in him throughout the story. He may be broke, but he can mend it is just going to take time. Alex has no living family, but he has his fiancé Emily and a friend named, Will from his childhood.

Alex has been taking pictures and documenting the wars around the world for quite some time. The things that he has witnessed must be is horrifying. And he was abducted and tortured not long before all of this happened. Alex has this vulnerability that also makes him endearing. He is such a great character.

This was an entertaining read and kept my attention, even if it's not a work of fine literature. Definitely a good summer read.

This book is so good that I couldn’t stop reading.
The writing is flawless and the story makes you wanna turn the pages faster and faster to know what happens next, what happened in the past and who kidnaps Emily as well as who’s the real killer of Cori. I loved how the author mixes real love and relationships with suspense and so many twists.
Looking forward to the next books in the series.
