I have officially lost all my "pretentious" "artsy" cred because I found it excruciatingly slow. You spend the entire time in the mind of someone on the verge of having a panic attack and who dwells on things for a long time. I actually found myself wishing something would happen. I like slow-paced stories! I don't need to feel "connected" or like the characters are "relatable" to enjoy something! But I could not get into this, I was just begging for it to be over... which is hilarious considering it's a novella.

The major problem is it being a novella. It needed to be a full length novel. Not because I wanted more (I 💯 do!) but there’s a glaring plot device that’s never wrapped up at the end and it feels unfinished. As a reader I feel a bit cheated with that ending. Huge build up to just…nothing.
EDIT: I am completely changing my rating as this is the FIRST book and the second comes out in June 2024! I CANNOT stop thinking about about this book so I am ready to *hopefully* get all my questions answered!

The setting was by far the best thing about it, and I was so interested to know more about the world. The writing style would be a very close second though, with so many banger lines. And the parasite/disease element was so fascinating and made for the most interesting parts of the book.
One thing to note is that this feels YA (or maybe new adult). Not in a disparaging way. But the main character is a young woman (I don't think her age is specified, but she's still in school/just left school, and there are comments about her being just about old enough to think about getting married), and one of the main conflicts of the series (expectations)

Take a look at the content warnings but as someone who's sensitive to a lot of the things on this list, it was all handled with respect and care and didn't feel gratuitous or out of place.
Loved the ending:
I really thought the book was going to be about her journey and not what it took for her to leave (like a typical adventure story) and it was such a delightful surprise to see that her story was about the choice to take the journey and not the journey its self. It's a story I needed.
I would love a follow up to this, I adored it.
