I'm trying to not give all the books that I like five stars, but I didn't find anything to not like about this book. From the very first chapter when the main character is threatened with kidnapping, to the surprise (several surprises) ending, I could not stop listening to this book. The narrator, Tony Britton, did an excellent job with the voices.

Another great one by Dick Francis. This time, our Everyman Hero Neil Griffon is abducted and bullied into putting an amateur jockey up on the favorite mount for the big race. Just covering for his father after a serious car accident, he has no experience running a stable and is quickly in over his head.
Classic Francis at his best, we have the intricacies of a strained father / son relationship, empowered, strong women well ahead of their time, and a great Everyman main character in Neil. Yes, we have horses, and racing, and insights into the everyday operations of a racing stable. But we also have a smart mystery that will leave you guessing until the end.
I just love his books. 3.5 stars.

Dated but still good
Attitudes toward women remain most problematic in the oldest DF titles- for the most part I can set them aside long enough to enjoy the read...

I thought I'd read all of his so when my boss found this in a used book sale we were both pretty excited. I think it is one of his first and it was terrific.

My least favorite Dick Francis. Flat characters; none of the suspense.

I really enjoyed this one. Less a mystery than a thriller and with better character development on one of the central characters than you see in Francis’ writing. I wonder what the inspiration was?
