Mae and Jack Dempsey had taken Ellie to the park on a warm sunny afternoon for some quality family time. Mae was working all the hours she could so things were a bit fraught between her and Jack, mainly over money. They were sitting on a bench while Ellie was on the playpark. Jack had noticed a couple of people walking round the park with hoodies on and the hoods up. He thought they must have been very hot dressed like that.
Then in his peripheral vision he catches sight of someone running up to them, an arm raising, a glint of silver caught the sun, blinding him, then it was gone. Then Mae fell off the bench, laying in front of him, screaming, with a knife sticking out of her back. A crowd surrounded them, then Jack suddenly remembered their child, he shouted, ‘Ellie.’ There was no reply, she was gone!

DI Erica Swift and DS Shawn Turner were called to the incident in the park, they questioned the witnesses and watched CCTV. They got SOCO to pick up as much as they could from the park as they saw the attacker had dropped something from his pocket. They went to a local shop and asked for their CCTV from the day they wanted, Yousef rang the shop owner and left a message. When the police had gone, he went upstairs and told Farhad what the police wanted and handed over Erica’s card. They checked the CCTV, deleted it and sent some from a different camera. Then they decided they had to bring their plans forward but Yousef wasn’t ready to be part of the plan.

From the Missing Persons Unit they heard another child had gone missing six weeks earlier, no ransom had been received. The family had been out, the child was seven years old and he was riding a bike whilst the parents pushed the pram with his brother in. He rode ahead, they had stopped to tend the baby. When they got to the corner, the bike was laying there and he was gone.

Could these two cases be linked? Could the stabbing have been used as a distraction? Why was Mae targeted in the park?

I was hooked by this book from start to finish. It was a fabulous story and superbly written. The story flowed well and I found I couldn’t put it down. I found the characters were well picked and the author covered some good topics in this book.
