I'm sorry, I'm not trying to be mean, and it seems this book has resonated with folks which is great. But this is one of the worst books I have ever read. Pedestrian writing. Not going into depth in anything. There was one part that felt so abrupt I thought my book was missing pages. No likeable characters. Just a very unpleasant read. The issues and topics it is trying to address have just been done better before. This was awful.

This book was not what I thought it was going to be, I was happy with it start to finish.
Some of the lines in this book were so profound and accurate to the point of personal experience. I was floored by some of the wisdom in this book, it made me feel very seen.
I also love how there's multiple issues being addressed with even side characters, it shows the complexity of each of our lives and how people may think or notice one thing but it's not enough to tip the scale, until it is. True so real life and when it's thru the eyes of a teenager, even more real.
I was nervous there would be some kinda cheesy ending that wraps up everything in a nice bow but it was so much more realistic than that and I have a ton of respect. Happy I waited for the hype to die down, made it now worth it.

I loveeeed this book. It’s one I wish I had read when I was younger. Sánchez tackles the topic of losing a loved one as a teenager beautifully, and I loved the themes of mental health, generational trauma, connecting to one’s culture and empathizing with the struggles of those who have come before. The main character is so lovable and easy to root for. I can’t wait to watch the film adaptation!

It's refreshing to read an daughter-of-immigrants story where you see connections between trauma and mental health -that felt like something new this book was exploring. This book has gotten great reviews, so I think my mediocre rating is more due to my own experience with it. I personally had a hard time developing any deep feeling for the narrator. I think the fact that she didn't have a lot of empathy for those around her and also that she had supportive friends who she didn't really support back made it hard for me to feel invested in her success or growth. It's also pretty depressing, so without a solid character connection to pull me through it took me a long time to finish.
