I'm not sure if I should say this is one of the best Demonica novellas or one of the best 1,001 Dark Nights books, because truly, it's both. I've read all of the Demonica series except for one novella, and a pretty good chunk of the 1,001 books, so I'd like to think I'm a pretty good judge of both.

If you're a fan of 1,001 Dark Nights and can't decide if you should dip your toe in the pool that is Demonica, go ahead and just jump in! Though this is part of an ongoing (I think it's still ongoing) series, there is not a need to know the whole back story or to know what the future may hold for the series. Ione does an amazing job with her three 1,001 Dark Nights books, giving just enough info to get you through each book, while not spoiling the previous twenty-something books so you could go back and read them if you decide you loved this book enough to try the whole series.
And Demonica fans should definitely get in on this book because it tells the story of Zhubaal, Azagoth's assistant. He's been featured in several of the previous books, so getting to learn of his mysterious past is a total plus.

I'd recommend this to anyone really, it's just a great book that can be read as a stand alone novella.

This really made me want to actually read book two that I’ve been putting off forever? I remember not really liking the writing but liking the concept, and now im thinking it might have improved over time. I think I’ll pick it up for my 2022 tbr.

Z
By Larissa Ione
Demonica Book #11.7
1001 Dark Nights

This book was too short. I enjoyed it so much that I was disappointed when I read it in less than a day. Larissa Ione does such a marvelous job of making me love her flawed and quirky characters that I feel like I know them and am right there alongside of them. Z and Vex’s story was no different.

But first, I must go on a little rant.

I have no idea how someone figures that a book is numbered 11.7 as opposed to 11.5. I can only guess that it is because this is the third short novella since the last full novel which was Revenant but the first one which was also included in the 1001 Dark Nights series was Hades which the Larissa Ione numbered 11.5. Why did Hades get a half a number but Base Instincts and Z only got 1/10th of a number? Just wondering? I know it is a stupid thing to wonder about but for some reason these things bug me when others don’t even notice them.

Rant over.

Zhubaal works for Azagoth aka the Grim Reaper. A century ago, his beloved Laura was killed. He made a vow to her to always love her and be loyal to her and to find her even after death. He knows her soul was reincarnated decades ago and has been searching for her ever since.

Vex is a magnet for demon souls. If she is near them when they die, she absorbs them. She used to make good money off of them, selling them on the black market to demons who could remove them from her but since Revenant has taken over the Underworld, he’s made it almost impossible because he has been severely punishing soul reapers except for Azagoth so she decides to go make a deal with Azagoth to get the souls she currently possesses out of her before one of them, one that seems to be very powerful and super evil, possesses her.

When Z meets Vex, he can feel that one of the souls she has within her is Laura’s soul. He wants to keep track of where Laura’s soul goes this time so he can be reunited with her when she is reincarnated again but things get complicated when Azagoth has trouble pulling out the powerful soul. He may not be able to do it without destroying Vex and Laura.

Z realizes that he is attracted to Vex and feels guilty because he has made a vow to Laura and has remained a virgin. I had my suspicions that maybe Vex’s soul was actually Laura’s reincarnated soul but neither Vex nor Z though about that. Z constantly compared Vex and Laura to each other and I have to say that Laura sounded really boring and mediocre. I mean, she was supposed to be a warrior angel and couldn’t even fight well. I liked Vex’s spunkiness a lot better.

As I mentioned before, I was bummed when the book ended so soon. I wonder who will be the subject of the next Demonica book.

Spoilers....

Okay, so I was excited for this book because we allllll know Seffra loves her reincarnation stories! Zhubaal was an angel who gave up his wings to find his one true love who had fallen and had died.

I liked Vex from the get-go and I liked where the story was going but...MAAANNNNNN.....ZHUBAAL....

I get that you wanted Laura and while you got her soul, you got a whole new person. I wasn't fan of how Ione did the whole reincarnation thing because she made Laura and Vex two totally different people. I feel like reincarnation is such a hard thing to write about because it can be done so differently.

I wasn't a fan of the ending either. When Zhubaal told Vex that he gave Laura his virginity but he's giving Vex everything else...I was like waaahhhhhhhhhhh?!?!?!?!?!

She is the same person and you slept together under the pretense that you knew she was one in the same....

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review. Review can be found on *Milky Way of Books*

I missed the world of Daemonica. It was one of the series I had devoured back on 2015 and was glad to return to. Vex is an Enim with an unusual power and circumstances leads her before Azagorth. Z is the fallen Angel who has been searching his lover's soul for centuries. As the two come together an old enemy will appear and emotions will be revealed.

I liked the cameo appearances of favorite characters and I hope to read more later on how the others got along.

Eh...

While I enjoy Zhubaal story, to be honest, he is the weakest hero in Demonica world. I just can't connect with him, and imho, he seems like teenager to me with this reincarnation thing. If angels and demons know the NA-thingie, Zhubaal will come into this teritory. Make sense, tho. If I remember correctly, Z is the youngest hero of Demonica series (I can be wrong, if the Seminus brothers is not in their hundred year yet. Not counting Aric, since he's human). So compared to another like Reaver, Revenant, Azagoth, Hades, the Horsemen, etc etc, he's immature. Too naive for a fallen angel

On the other side, I like Vex (whom I always mispronounced with "sex" :/). I like her personality and how Larissa handle the reincarnation theme. The conflict is simple, tho. The main story just about drama between Vex and Z, and since Z is not remarkable character for me, he's already forgotten in the sea of many hot men in Demonica world :/

Larissa didn't disappoint in smut department. Heck, it's her SPECIALTY after all! Make me hot and cold and bothered at the same time :P

I wonder what next in Demonica world. Larissa said she will write about the Seminus and Horsemen children. Wonder too what the next nemesis will come, with Satan now out of the field. Can't hardly wait! :D

I really loved the book. It seemed too short and the reincarnation storyline was somewhat predictable. I loved both characters and getting to revisit Azagoth and his realm was great. I wish there was more to their story but it was a real page turner. Larissa never disappoints!

These are always good. The world building has been done with such care that all the books meld together. The characters are great and the plots interesting. This one was no different.

Z and Vex have a second chance love story with a twist! I loved the push and pull of their relationship, the twists of the plot and finally getting to see another side of Z.
