I wasn't expecting to learn a lot about politics when I picked up this book, but to my surprise I learned some Afghani history and how war has been destroying the country even before the U.S. hated Bin Laden.

Loved how the narrative follows two generations of women, and how enraged & feminist I felt throughout the whole book. There are some really painful depictions of domestic violence throughout and I had to put it down many times in order to disconnect. But important & very moving.

When I finished reading 'A Thousand Splendid Suns’, I couldn’t stop smiling inspite of the tight feeling in my chest that had grown progressively since I turned the first page of this book. Yes, this story is terrifying, infuriating and painfully real. But above all that, this is a story of hope, perseverance, courage and love that strengthens the soul to move ahead even in the direst of circumstances. Mariam and Laila, two women so different from each other, yet forced into matrimony to the same man who treats them like specks of dirt on his shoes. But instead of becoming 'the other woman' , they find companionship, solace and strength in each other. This story is heart warming and heart wrenching at the same time. Hosseini takes us through thirty years of war torn Afghanistan and the horrors endured by its people especially women. Never have I been more grateful for being born in a country that sees me as a free citizen just like its men.
This is one story that needs to be read. .

I was asked to read this book by a friend who stated that I would rather not like it as there is humanity thought and through it. I must admit that Hosseini is not really my type of writer (a bit too much of melodrama for me) but I enjoyed the book and find it a good read for everyone interested in the history of Afghanistan and life of Islam women.
