Another great read from Barbara Kingsolver, who is slowly cementing herself as my favorite author. This book was GORGEOUS! Her writing is transformative, and her passages from Orleanna’s and Adah’s perspective were the standouts. The setting and themes in this book was really special, and having read a non-fiction book about the Republic of Congo, (King Leopold’s Ghost) I thought it was really fascinating. Colonialism, religion, white supremacy, feminism, family, world politics, nature, corruption were all held in a mere 500 some odd pages. It did take me a while to finish this one (much to digest!) and it did slow down towards the end
Spoiler after the family splits up
, but I think it’s going into my favorite reads of the year, if not of all time. So good that I want to read it again and highlight every line.
