A good retelling of the story is eclipsed by the most stunning illustrations imaginable. The scene with animals in the forest is my favourite. I wish she would illustrate the Wizard of Earthsea.

I thought I was really going to like this one, but I didn’t as much. It was a very good amount of text. I would say right away, it would be best for kids older than 1st grade. Really, the book was just the traditional telling of Snow White. Some sentences read poetically. For example, “And envy and pride, like weeds, kept growing higher and higher in her heart, so that day and night she had no peace.” Just for the sake of it, to keep kids entertained, I would have at least added a picture and text, instead of having two pages with text and then the following the “picture spread”. Although I do like fairy tales, I wasn’t a particular fan of this version. It was okay, and I wouldn’t necessarily introduce it to a youngster. They definitely have to be a bit older in order to fully like this one. The pictures were nice, however, and I really like the colors, hues, and tones it had. (The ending was a bit harsh and I wasn’t expecting it to end like that at all.)

This is an unfair review of sorts and based entirely on the quality of reproduction of Burkert's illustrations.
I had been after a copy of this since I first saw Nancy Ekholm Burkert's illustrations and been swept away by her wonderful pen and ink alongside watercolour work. How you can really capture the beauty of Snow-White seemed beyond me but Burkert's plates in this retelling or just perfect.
Sadly, what is imperfect is the terrible quality of the reproduction by Square Fish which gives it an almost photocopy-like quality.

Caldecott Honor book - This classic tale was is not your Disney version of the book, be prepared for the more graphic phrases to be expected. Double-spread pictures followed by double spread of text. Good use of rhyming and repetition. "Mirror, mirror on the wall, Who is fairest of us all?"

The illustrations in this telling of snow white are rather spooky. I rather like dwarfs that are nice to look at, too. The ones in this book look scary and unpleasant.
