So fun & enjoyable. Why did I ever stop reading fairy tales?

Very cute version of the story. My students read 2 Puss in Boots stories and then compared them. They were surprisingly very similar and this was one of them.

Caldecott Honor winning retelling of Puss in Boots. Sure the art is fine as is the writing. But the cat is a scoundrel, and the his master a do-nothing liar at best. Not bad. But not especially good.

Upon rereading the book, the art holds well, but the prose is a little clunky. The overall trickster story is brilliant, aside from the King giving away his daughter like she's property and performing the ceremony and wedding the same day she met the cat's master.

OG Review
Give me art, give me Puss in boots, give me adventure! It's a kids book, but you gotta understand I was a kid then and I loved this book, especially the fact that the cover has no words besides the little award sticker in the corner. It tells the story perfectly and I can't express enough how obsessed I am with the art work and style.

We read this version and the Jerry Pinkey version at the same time. I fully expected to prefer the Pinkey version because I am a big fan of his work but I actually preferred this one, it was written and illustrated in a slightly more enjoyable and humorous way.

Caldecott Honor 1991 - This is really a strange story when you think about it.
