This volume was such a nice change up after the last two more fight/battle driven volumes. It was great to have something a bit more character/dialogue driven than just action packed. Getting a better look into Nami's character was so well timed and, i think, a necessary part in order to make the crew feel like a real team now that they're all back together again.

That being said, I did find Bellemere's sacrifice frustrating. I get what it's doing in terms of plot and character building for Nami, but the action/decision itself just doesn't sit right with me. Just lie! She doesn't stop being their mom by pretending for a little while in order to protect them and herself. Maybe if Nami and Nojiko were teenagers instead of kids it would work better for me, but as is, I just don't see how dying -espectially dying in front of them- was in any way worth it. It does so much to inform Nami's character, so I fully understand what it was doing plot and character wise, but it still just irks me. I just don't think she needed to die to get us here.

Daaaamn this volume hits hard!!!

Still, this is the volume where One Piece finally comes out on its own. It's where the plot and the characters click into place, where the emotion kicks into high gear, and where the Straw Hat Pirates become something more than just a bunch of morons hanging out with one another.

This was a great installment for a couple of reasons:
1) The characters were all distinct in both voice and depiction which helps since there were a lot
2) A LOT of plot progression, which we don't always get, and we learned a ton about Nami
3) Stakes were raised for everyone in Luffy's crew and we learned more about the team
4) Ends on one of the best cliffhangers yet in the series

This volume was heavy with backstory for Nami's character and allowed her to be fully fleshed out for us to understand what she's going through and what she's trying to accomplish.

Characters:

Luffy - I LOVE Luffy in this Volume, because he respects Nami’s decision and doesn't step into her business, but he is constantly there for the case that she needs him and changes her mind. He'll wait for her to be done with her business because he wants her in his crew. he doesn't care about her past, he likes her and he wants her to come with them and then once she breaks down he is there and he is ready to burn Arlong down for her.

Zolo - Zolo is AMAZING. I love the guy so much. He is just Zolo. Him at Arlong Park is hilarious.

Nami - We really get to know Nami here and I am loving it. I love Nami as a child and I still love her now.

Usopp - Usopp is just brilliant and the way he cares for Nami and feels for her is amazing.

Sanji - I always love Sanji. But i tend to love him slightly less whenever he is being heart eyes Sanji, so he was fine this volume, but not at his best. Love him for listening to Nojiko.

Other Characters:

Nojiko - still absolutely ADORE HER.

Chabo - still feel sorry for the kid, but he is kinda irrelevant now.

Genzo - THERE ARE NO WORDS. He is probably my favourite side character so far. (battle it out with Nojiko and Kaya, okay?^^)

Bellemere - Belle-Mere’s sacrifice is one of those things that really make this manga special.

Momoo - NOW MOMOO I DO LIKE. I love this seacow WAY TOO MUCH. Momoo is so much fun :D I kept grinning^^ it i ridiculous how happy this cow makes me.

Johnny & Yosaku - MY BOYS. I love these weakling idiots okay?!?!? They are my weakling idiots and i will cherrish them forever. You guys did good. Well not against the Arlong Pirates... but you did so bad that they didn't expect anything after and didn't kill you, which in my evaluation is Good :D

Special Shoutout in this Volume goes to: Nami & Luffy (the ending of the volume just really swayed me here obviously.) But Nojiko and Genzo are close.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Villains:

Arlong - Is so bad and SO MUCH FUN. I really adore him as a villain.

Nezumi - Is the worst and i HATE HIM. Which i guess makes him a good underling for Arlong, but still THIS GUY... ARGHHHHHHH

Hachi - The Zolo and Hachi Scene was pure brilliance.

Chuu - Is memorable and i am liking him. As a villain. I dig him, even though we have got very little of him so far.

Kuroobi - is there in the background... i guess. he's okay so far. nothing major to say here.

Spoilers:

- The Arlong Park arc continues as Luffy edges closer to Cocoyashi village in an attempt to get his ship and friends back.
- The story does a great job selling Arlong as the main villain.
- The cold monster is pure evil, always acting like his cruel acts are backed up by honor and pride. His hold on the island and its people deliver a new dynamic the overall story has yet to have.
- To save the life of the villager Genzō, Usopp angers Arlong by shooting at him.
- Meanwhile, Roronoa Zolo, freed by Nami and told to run away while he still can defeats Arlong's low-ranking crews at Arlong Park and meets gullible octopus fish-man Hatchan, who brings him to Nami's hometown.
- Usopp is captured and brought to Arlong Park, where Nami is accused of hiring Zolo to kill Arlong.
- To increase the crew's mistrust and save Usopp's life, she apparently kills him and kicks his body into the sea.
- Later it was revealed that Nami stabs her hand to save Usopp!! Honestly that would leave such a wicked scar.
- Monkey D. Luffy and Sanji arrive and although they want to help, Nami turns them away.
- we find out about Nami and her true reasons for being a thief as well as a pirate hater.

- In a flashback, Arlong's crew arrives and extorts protection money from the island's inhabitants.
- Nami and Nojiko's foster mother, Bellemere, who cannot pay for all three of them, gives up her life to save her daughters.
- Belle-mère: And whatever happens, don't curse the age you were born into!! Don't worry about what anyone says!! If you can survive, then happy times.. lots of 'em.. will come your way!!!
- Belle-Mere’s sacrifice is one of those things that really make this manga special. Nami’s backstory has truly made her character transcend.
- I love belle-mere, she was such an amazing person and mother, i just really love this volume, the villagers, Nami's sister and Nami, I just love them all. Such a good volume!
- Nami joins Arlong's crew as their cartographer, and they agree on a price for which she can buy her village back.
- Back in the present, Arlong breaks the agreement and Nami accepts Luffy's help.

- Nami's backstory, like Sanji's, is tragic and pulls the veil on Nami's well hidden feelings.
- You start to love her adoptive mother Bellemere and your hatred for Arlong only deepens.
- This back story is definitely one of the best in all One Piece.
- Nami’s backstory is heartbreaking but helps us understand her motives.
- Just when you think Arlong could get any worse we see his villainy increase in the present as he holds Nami to a bargain she cant ever hope to escape.
- The reason behind Nami’s betrayal of the Straw Hat Pirates and the reason she became a thief – one that steals from pirates – to repurchase her hometown from "Saw-Tooth" Arlong with all the treasure she steals, which predictably Arlong reneges on
- As hope fades all she can do is ask for help from the friends she betrayed.
- Luffy shows that charming friendship of his and ,without a single question, agrees.

- The best part of this volume has to be the epic ending that brings Luffy and crew to take action as they see one of their friends hurt. Beautiful.
- I don't even know what to say except... Nami I love u
- the title of this volume is very fitting, because i freaking cried!
- The panel of nami begging for luffy's help got me so bad, and then the whole crew, without a second thought, backing her up!!
- the iconic ,,Help“ Moment.
- "Luffy... Help me"
- Ahhh
