There is a lot to take away from this work by Tolstoy. It is a very good example of the zeitgeist of the late 19th and early 20th century. There is a large focus on class and power structures we see through out the novel. Whether it be how the Russian state controlled its populace or interpersonal relationships between the characters of the book. There’s also a focus on who we are as individuals. What is our purpose and meaning and how do we find it? These are some of the concepts that Tolstoy explores. This book is a great introduction to Tolstoy.

Not as engaging as other works by Tolstoy. Enjoyable but I don’t think its lessons will stay with me like Anna Karenina’s, or the narrative/characters like from War & Peace, or both of the above from Ivan Ilyich. May read again but far from the top of the list.

My first read of Tolstoy, and a lovely book overall. Tolstoy never ceases to provide intimate details of setting and character when they are most appropriate and occasionally sublime. Nevertheless, I was disappointed to find that he undermines this story with a particularly superficial appraisal of the place of Christianity in 19th century Russia. This is a beautiful read and one I recommend heartily for an introduction to pre-Revolutionary Russia, early communist sentiment, and human redemption.

The two sides, one being virtue as outlined by religion and internal moral code and the other the concept of a marginalized existence that makes everything you do perceived as criminal have a hard time battling it out in his head I feel. The imagery was very nicely constructed, and the beurocracy hell of the prison, legal technicalities, and incarceration system was also described in a way that to me was very visceral in its going-around-in-a-circle endless tedium, if that makes sense.
