This was such an interesting mystery (but also feels like it could just be "fiction" or even "literary fiction," but also, don't listen to me - I am a peasant and don't know anything lol) and my introduction to this author. I enjoyed how the book alternates between the past and present, with Lore telling her story of her double-life with two husbands in different countries to Cassie, a reporter who is fascinated with Lore's motives for why she made these decisions. Ultimately, Cassie feels there is more to the story of one husband finding out about the other and killing him, and she's set on telling the story from Lore's point of view, rather than the sensationalized headlines.
I appreciated the commentaries on what society demands and expects of you as a mother, a wife, a woman! I find it amusing that the worst thing a woman could do is simply want more for herself. Do I think she could have talked to her husband about the possibilities of an open relationship, polyamory, or swinging? Absolutely. Totally. However, this is not 2024 that this book is set in lol. Plus, those are not always realistic options that any partner would be open to. So, like am I here endorsing infidelity? No, but I can't sit here and judge Lore and posit myself as the peak of moral purity either.
Anyway, this did take me a bit to get through, just because I did feel the storytelling was slow at times. However, the ending and final reveal were surprising (but also not) and heart-wrenching.

I have to say that I have some lingering questions/feelings about some pieces of the story. However, because I was listening to the audiobook (with lots of distractions), it's very possible I missed bits and pieces throughout. The epilogue definitely left me wondering a couple things, and I do think that that was intentional on the author's part.

Gutierrez takes great pains with writing about Laredo as authentically as she can, and her work has paid off. If you've been to Laredo you will recognize all the places Cassie and Lore go to.
Typical of modern true crime entertainment Gutierrez leaves the real victims out of the story: the children of the murdered husband. They don't get any catharsis, or money, from Cassie's book profits. Carlos even admitted to being suicidal to Cassie during one interview.
I'm glad Gutierrez explores, and validates, the idea of a woman being more than a mother and care giver, but we have to do better by the true victims of crime by getting their permission to explore these stories and then by centering them in these narratives, instead of trying to profit from their pain by creating the next hot Netflix series.
