Ondanks dat het geen literair meesterwerk is, heb ik wel ontzettend genoten van het boek. Het terugkomen in de wereld van de Hunger Games was voor mij nostalgie.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is a prequel I think we all deserved. I remember when author, Suzanne Collin leaked the news that a prequel was in the works, I was super excited and curious about what I could be. I've always wanted some sort of story before the trilogy and so we got it.....A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

The prequel revolves around 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow as a young school student at a high prestigious school called the Academy. At this school, for their final assignment before they graduate they are given the task to mentor a tribute for the upcoming 10th Annual Hunger Games.  It follows Coriolanus mentoring the District 12 female tribute, Lucy Gray Baird, and trying to keep her alive in the area. At first, I was a bit skeptical about the prequel being around Snow's rise to power as I didn't know where this story would be heading, my expectation was pretty low from the start.....oh how wrong was I...

3.5⭐️ Returning to the Hunger Games arena after so long was both sentimental and unnerving. This prequel brought a lot more depth to certain aspects of the original series, but at times it felt like there were some unnecessary “nods” to the originals where it didn’t really fit. Overall, very entertaining but I did feel like it could’ve been broken into two books and have each section of Snow’s life be a bit less rushed.

The pacing knocked this down .25 stars. The last 30% dragggggged. Other than that it was fantastic.
