It's been a while since I've read a vampire novel. And this did not disappoint. I listened to it on audiobook, and though I prefer to read, I felt like the narrators added to the story.

The plot twist at the end was unexpected, and my heart broke for the FMC.

But the build-up I thought was good.

My only frustration was that I struggled to keep track of some of the less prominent characters that turned out to be significant in the end. This somewhat interrupted the flow of the story for me.

Spice 2.5/5
Plot 4.75
Book boyfriend: This is difficult because of the plot twist, but the for the most part 90% maybe a 3.5/5

I absolutely love this book! It’s near perfection and it’s beautifully devastating 🖤

I think I'm torn on this one. I'd like to give it a 4, I think. I enjoyed reading it, and the tournament system was fun to read. I also don't know if I ever really came to love the characters? Except maybe poor Ibrahim. I'd like to learn more about the gods and how all that works. I'm going to read the second one. But I think I'm a little surprised after how much I've read people gush about this series.

((Also - and this is petty because I have read way too many vampire books and also all of Maas' work - I'm not a huge fan of winged vampires. Shapeshifting to have wings? Sure. Turning into animals a 'la the old myths? Of course. But... feather wings and bat wings? I dunno.))

Ix's tits, this was a fun read. My only regret is that I didn't read it sooner.
It's like the vampire hunger games with sexy bat wings and LOTS of blood.

In so many enemies-to-lovers books, it's just so blatantly obvious that the two love birds don't actually want to kill one another and it takes me out of the story. But this one really sold me; they actually do plan to kill each other...

Oraya is a smart, funny and strong 23 yo with a loving adoptive vampire father (for better or worse) who is tired of trying to hack it as a human in a vampire world.

Raihn is a vampire who hates being a vampire (naturally) and wants to make his world a better place for everyone. And he loves to get a rise out of Oraya.

But they both enter into a blood bath contest where only the last one standing will win, and with it a prize of anything they wish for.

This slow-burn, gory romantasy ends on a ravine hanger (not quite a cliff) and I fully plan to dive into book 2 ASAP.

A good Romantasy for readers who aren’t afraid of gore, myths, and hunger game esc fights to the death. The political revolutions at the end were a predictable but enjoyable conclusion to lead into the sequel.

Tropes: enemies to lovers, wings, rivals, enemies to allies
