Fantasy, Enemies to Lovers, Hunger Games, 2 1/2 🔥
“Finding comfort in all the ways she was like me and all the ways I wished I could be more like her.”
“My father loved me. I knew this. But he loved me in spite of what I was. Loved the parts of me that he could make like him.”
“She was a dreamer. Kind, but soft. She’d rather escape to the world she dreamed of than fight for this one.”

I could go on but many aspects of this book were just so bad from a technical perspective that I found it difficult to overlook. The characters had no depth so it was hard to get into. I actually liked Fourth Wing MORE and I thought it was pretty dreadful!

Honestly, I was really surprised by this novel. There were so many twists, so much world building that really immerses you in the story that I honestly could not stop reading. The fact that I didn't know how it was going to end, and that I was surprised by the way it did end, was just so thrilling to me. It is taking every ounce of willpower that I have to not start the second novel tonight. I really need to sleep! 😂

The world building is bad. I mean really terrible. Also, what limited info we get, does not make sense.
The characters are both predictable and annoying.
Again we get the trope of an old guy with a young girl.
I could go on. These are just a few of the aspects of this book that both iritated me and bored me.
The only reason I gave this book 3 stars, is that the ending did give enough insight for me be minimally interested in reading the next book.

If you missed my stories this past week here’s an overview.
-
Oraya is a badass FMC. She’s human adopted by the Nightborn King Vampire. The character development for her was exquisite. She joins the Kejari a tournament between all three vampire houses best warriors. The winner receives one wish. It can be anything.
-
“Human or vampire, the rules of survival are the same: never trust, never yield, and always – always – guard your heart.”
-
Raihn the dark and dangerous MMC. A ruthless vampire with incredibly talented skills & strengths. He is the enemy. Fighting for the crown and the biggest competition.
War breaks out in the House of Night, drawing everyone’s attention including those involved in the Kejari.
What happens when everything you thought you knew is now a lie?
-
“Death isn’t frightening when weighed against an insignificant existence.”
-
THE LAST PART OF THE BOOK had me in a chokehold!! I literally couldn’t put it down. My husband kept hearing me yelling things at the book 🤣 this is definitely one of the best world building and battles I’ve seen in a fantasy setting in a long time.
I am SO ready to start the sequel.

This story is largely a vampire hunger games-ish situation, but it had several sweet and thoughtful moments spread throughout. Reflections on friendship, found family, political systems, how we value some people over others, etc.
A fun read that also has depth to it, in my humble opinion. Would recommend.
I’ll add, if you aren’t big on reading series (hi, it’s me) - I’m comfortable with this as a stand-alone. The ending is a total cliffhanger, but that’s fine by me.
