I loved Oraya from the moment the story started. She was so utterly
human but not
. And Raihn...I mean, I love me a good morally gray MC and he's at the top. I thoroughly enjoyed this story, and cannot wait to see how it continues.

The author is brilliant. And her writing is superb.

I told folks I was reading an edgier Twilight. I still think that. But there's so much about it I can't put into words. Just superb.

I started off loving this book, but by 20 percent the protagonist still seemed very one-note and predictable.

As someone who is just dabbling in full-on romantasy (because don’t get me wrong, I love a good love story) this was SUCH a strong start. You can tell that so much thought has been put into the world building & the characters, and the evolution of their relationship felt so natural. I FLEW through this book in a few days, I literally could not stop reading it.

I adore Raihn, I feel like the whole time I was screaming at Oraya to be nicer to him 😂. but also, like Oraya, I feel a bit betrayed by him in the ending (but also understand why he…omitted certain details from her). Him and Mische brought so much color to the world and I’m very excited to see more of them in the coming books (because I hear Miche is the protagonist in the next duology).

Also, I will say - I am not a fan of gore, but I tolerate it much better in books because you can often sort of make it more palatable - this book is definitely gory but not gross (looking at you, The Devil Takes You Home)

I really loved the intensity of the trials in this book. I also really liked how a lot of the character motivation was hidden from the reader in a way that we got just enough to be intrigued, but not too much to be overly predictable.
Some aspects of the plot were easy to guess, but overall it set up for book 2 very well.
The plot was great, the characters were complex and far from flawless, there was mystery and tension throughout the book.

If the Hunger Games and Game of Thrones created a vampire-filled child, that would be The Serpent and the Wings of Night. Overall a really good read, multi-dimensional, flawed characters in a vast, danger-filled world. With minor amounts of smut (which I could do without tbh) the story keeps you guessing until the end. Points marked a bit down for the ending however, though I’ll have to check out the next book in the series to fully make my decision.

I heard that if you like ACOTAR then you will like The Serpent and the Wings of Night. I can confirm! I was skeptical coming into this book but this turned out to be such an amazing read. I thought I knew how it would end but I was so surprised and delighted by the twists and turns. I can’t wait to read the next one.
