I picked up this book on a whim because it sounded like an interesting, new age take on social media and murder. 10 years ago, Jess's mom was murdered by a serial killer who was never identified. She was the first victim, and for 10 years the "Magpie Man" has left the police stumped as to his identity. Jess, still grappling with the loss of her mother, decides to join a social media reality show so she can share her story and *hopefully* find someone who knows something about who the Magpie Man is.
I enjoyed this story more than I expected. Jess is a normal teenager, and she is dealing with her normal life, all while under the new scrutiny of a camera. Through her segment of the show, she uncovers new details about her mother's murder and meets new friends to help her along the way. I do think her investigative skills were verging on the realm of unbelievable, but I still rooted for her! I also was surprised by the killer reveal. The author left just enough clues to make it believable, but it was still a huge surprise to me!
I definitely recommend this to those who like a YA Nancy Drew type murder mystery.
