14 Ways to Die was a fun YA thriller to read. It kept me on my toes as I read about Jessica and her journey with filming her reality YouTube show.

There were a lot of twists in the story. I was surprised to find out who the Magpie Man was. It was honestly unexpected for me.

I struggled a bit to get through this book. Don't get me wrong, it was a good story. I just wish it was executed better.

It annoys me how the main character breaks the law because she feels she has the right to if she finds evidence. I know that sometimes in real life, cops don't do as much as they should in a case, but that  doesn't mean that a teenager should. Leave that to the real investigators. The blatant stupidity of Jessica  was aggravating.

Also, her viewpoint of "You don't understand what I've been through" was irritating. The other victims know exactly how she feels. Almost every time someone tried sympathizing, she pushed them away.

I wish we got to read more about the other 4 people competing to earn the full 3 months for their YouTube show. After they all decided to quit, (which was really weird by the way), they were never talked about again. If the author is going to include them, at least keep them in the storyline. imo, the author shouldn't have included them at all.

The book also could have been a lot shorter. It dragged on and I found myself avoiding to finish it. I would've DNF'ed it, but I wanted to find out who the Magpie Man was.

Oh, and her sudden decision of wanting to be a therapist when she grows up was corny.

jess, the main character, wasn't the *most* likeable. i could very easily make the same mistakes as her but that doesn't make it less irritating. also, it doesn't come up much in the book—& we all know that unless stated otherwise the character is white & cishet—but there are moments that it is painfully obvious the author is both of those things. i will say, all in all, it was an enjoyable book.
albeit, there was a scene when her competitors gave up their opportunities to tell their viewers to follow her & it *did* felt like a cop out. also, her director/friend, danny, was implied to be crushing on her but like?? she was seventeen & he was in his twenties?? ew??

I received an eARC from the publisher via Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Jessica (Jess) Simmons mother was killed when Jess was only seven years old. Her mother was the first of many victims to be murdered by the Magpie Man. Ten years later, the killer is still at large and no clues have been left behind. Jess applies to be on an internet reality show and is chosen as the star for Monday’s. Each week a camera crew follows her around, filming her every minute. Every text, email, tweet, etc. will be monitored by the producers.

Jess takes this as a chance to remind the whole world what the Magpie Man did to her mother in the hopes that someone will come forward with a clue. Each week Jess delves deeper into the clues and receives many threats along the way. The Magpie Man is watching and he doesn’t like the attention she’s bringing his way. Will the man finally be caught or will Jess become another one of his victims?

This book is perfect for fans of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder. There is suspense and mystery at every page turn. I also thoroughly enjoyed the short chapters, as it makes the book seem to go by faster. I found myself thinking in the beginning I had the story ending figured out, but I definitely was surprised by the end. This was a stunning debut novel and I highly recommend you pick it up this upcoming week when it releases!
