I grew up an avid HP fan and still was very meh on this book. The writing was not great, the 4th wall was broken *constantly* and I grew annoyed with all of the “you’ll hear more about that later” So much of the book was focused on his childhood/first 2 movies and then whizzed through the rest.
The end chapters about his experiences with substance abuse, therapy, and depression felt much more genuine and interesting - however he danced around actually writing “depression” for so much of it that the effect he hoped to have by destigmatizing talking about mental health was undermined.
JK Rowling was also painted in a favorable light for creating such inclusive and invited stories despite her longstanding history of transphobia.
