⭐️ 4.5 "Summer Heat" Stars ⭐️
Since I first read the prequel of the Kings of Rittenhouse Series, I wanted to know more about Avery and Emmett! Their epic breakup during a graduation party left me with all sorts of questions about the real reasons for Avery’s actions. During the first two books of the series, the few moments where this couple was in the same spaces, the animosity was so high and the sparks still present. Maya Hughes provided all the answers I wanted in Ruthless King, a remarkable second chance romance bursting with feels, humour and steamy hot scenes!

Avery is a reliable heroine with so much dedication. She’s made difficult decisions in her past that cost her relationship with Emmett. She’s so loyal to her family that sometimes it’s at her own detriment, but it definitely shows the kind of compassionate person she is. Under all this strength, she’s hurting from this big load of secrets she kept for years from her friends and mostly Emmett, the guy she’s never forgotten. Emmett knows that Avery is hiding things from him and he’s determined to unveil the truth about their breakup years earlier. As much as he wants to hate her, she still has the same magnetic pull to him. This summer vacation with friends is the perfect setup for their broken relationship to heal.

I loved Avery and Emmett as individuals, but together they were so interesting too. It’s clear their conflict hides unresolved deep-rooted feelings. They have so much chemistry and turn up the heat. Their intense connection creates such powerful passion, but they also share some really sweet and emotional moments. They just need to expose these long kept secrets and trust each other to make this renewed romance live.

I enjoy in a novel when the supporting characters have a strong presence and it’s certainly the case with this story. I loved having all the Kings together for the summer. It certainly brings funny scenes between friends, but also supportive moments. They’re such a great group of people and rediscovering each one of them was so amazing!

Ruthless King is so far my favorite novel in the series, but I have a feeling that Olivia and Ford will have a very exciting story. With that ending, I’m prepared for something epic for those two. I only have praises for Maya Hughes and this latest addition to the Kings of Rittenhouse Series!

What a fun book! Yes there was a bit of heartache thrown in there, isn't that what a great book is all about... twisting you up inside and giving your emotions a ride on the tilt-a-whirl!!! This was my first Rittenhouse book, and I cannot wait to read the others. What else could you ask for, hot hockey players, best friends, a bit of tears, and a lot of fun!

As soon as I read about Emmett & Avery’s messy break up in book one, I knew I was going to love their book. God, the anticipation was almost too much! Trust me, they did not disappoint. My heart broke with both characters and I adored watching them rebuild their relationship. Emmett & Avery really did the second chance trope justice.

“I never stopped loving you. Even when I hated you with all of my being, even when I hated myself for it and wished I could carve my heart out of my chest, I still loved you.”

I wanted to get my hands on Avery and Emmett’s book since the beginning of this series. Ruthless King fell a bit short with my high anticipation. The reason for their past breakup and that caused so much damage between them so I wanted a good reason and in the end I wasn’t a bit fan of it.
Miscommunication is something I don't like that as conflict because I hate that a wait for characters just sit down and have a normal conversation especially when they clearly love each other.I really enjoyed this romance, Avery and Emmet have great chemistry. The characters are interesting, well-developed and written, I truly felt for them.If you are fan of second chance romances, like I'm definitely Ruthless King a try.

I really, really hate to do this but this book took me two weeks to read which is not a good sign (since I finished the first 80% in 2 days). After finishing the first book in this series and being pretty disappointed, I decided to try this one because the entire premise of two exes reuniting after four years apart sounded pretty fun. However, what I got was both disappointing and frustrating.

I liked (to a certain extent) the beginning of this book, especially because there was so much tension between Emmett and Avery, and you know sometimes drama can be fun. Once Emmett finally learns the truth about what happened four years ago and they get back together I was all for it... until some stuff started happening that I really wasn't a fan of.

My biggest critique of the first book in this series was the fact that I felt like there wasn't enough relationship development in comparison to the amount of steamy scenes, and I felt the exact same thing in this book but even worse. Emmett and Avery haven't been together for FOUR YEARS and when they finally reunite it's like they were never apart. People grow and change after four years apart and I find it incredibly difficult to believe that they would be able to fall back into the exact same relationship that they had before.

Another thing this book did that I cannot forgive is the sheer amount of miscommunication between the two main characters. I have said it once and I will say it again, miscommunication never fails to piss me off! The trend of the characters not telling each other shit was basically the plot of this story and I was not enjoying myself because of it.

A couple other things to take note of that I did not enjoy:
- how cliche and predictable certain plot points were
- how possessive and jealous Emmett was (he had no right, especially at the beginning)
- how dramatic some things were made to be
- how convenient the ending was

Honestly, I'm not trying to shit on this book because I can totally understand why other people enjoy it -- objectively I don't think it's a bad book. However, there were too many tropes and elements in this story that annoyed me and the fact that I had to force myself to read the last 8 chapters just shows how much I wasn't into this one. I think it's safe to say I will not be continuing on with the series which is sad because I hoped I had found a new romance series to get invested in.
