I recommend reading this one after Sandman #10, there’s so many references to things that happen later in the series that just don’t make sense if you’re reading it first.

This one really goes crazy with the surrealism of the dreamscape, requiring the reader to turn it around, and with artwork by JH Williams III that will blow your mind. The bonus content makes this edition really worth it.
And the storytelling...oh my god.

Now that the whole thing is finally out: It's great. Great art, great story. If you like Sandman, you'll like this.

The Sandman: Overture really enrichens some of my favourite moments in the main series. It explores the genesis of Dream's changing of heart that drives the main series, and in its brief duration, we're shown the Endless stretched to the very edges of their existence. Overture is all that Sandman is, pushed to new depths, and yet it barely scratches the surface. It's a glowing prequel and I am so ready to fall in love with Sandman all over again.

Finally got around to reading this prequel, published 20-ish years after the original run, and I have to say I'm a bit disappointed. I didn't like the circular layouts, didn't like the story, and didn't care about the unanswered questions it finally answered. My least favorite of the Sandman books.

Obviously one might enjoy it if read first of the Sandman works, but it is such a well written and gorgeous book that they still might. This is an overture in every sense of the word, and neatly captures the essence of Sandman.
