One of those books I will be returning to, deceptively simple, what is being said and how she is saying it. And with lines and moments that pull your heart out.

I absolutely love the poem Good Bones, it is what directed me to this book after seeing it on Instagram. I did not connect with the rest of the book like I connected with Good Bones.

“I mean what cut shape is made
whole by opening? I mean besides the heart.” (30)

This is a very tenderly crafted collection of poetry about life, love, motherhood, loss, and so much more. This beautifully heartfelt collection is a reflective and introspective meditation on the human condition and our terribly human connection to the world and each other. It can be so painful in the best-worst way.

Definitely recommend! Perhaps my favorite poetry collection this year~

Like many others, I imagine, my first encounter with Maggie Smith was through her titular poem, Good Bones. What Smith lacks in subject variety (a matter of personal preference), she makes up for by re-examining the same themes and questions through different lenses. Her language is so precise, and her emotions so raw throughout that repetition hardly matters.

When reading poetry, I like to return to Emily Dickinson's definition of the form: "If I read a book and it makes my whole body so cold no fire can warm me I know that is poetry. If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry." Good Bones is the only poetry collection I've ever read that I had to put down because it was too good. No joke, I read Rough Air, moaned like I'd been stabbed in the belly, turned my Kindle off, rolled over, and cried myself to sleep.

Good Bones isn't even the best poem in here, and we all know that one's perfect.
