This was an exciting climax for the war with Hybern in the ACOTAR series. There were multiple moments where I cried or couldn’t put the book down because of what was happening. It definitely sucks you in! I also love the ensemble of characters. I ended up feeling very invested in all of them.

WOW. This one had me going THROUGH IT. What a glorious heart-pounding whirlwind. Alliances lost and found, sweeping war across many lands and climates… this is what a true magical fantasy book should be. Of course I love the romance involved and all of the friendships sewn into the heart of this series, but ACOWAR was definitely heavy on intense battle and strategy and unbridled power, which really drew me in even deeper to that fantasy world where anything could happen. And anything DID happen!! While a little slow through the middle of the story after an incredibly cunning and sharp start, the last 200 pages more than made up for it. Edge of my seat with tears in my eyes, ready to slaughter Hybern like a well-trained Illyrian soldier. It was, in a word, EPIC.

LONG LIVE PRYTHIAN!!!!!

I liked this book the best of the series. It wasn’t an amazing book, but it was more worth reading to me than the others. While there were definitely some cheesy parts and bad writing, particularly when it came to the romance, there were some really deep themes that ran through this novel. Like the impact of war on peoples lives and the way PTSD affects people and relationships. Or accepting, loving, and forgiving oneself. Or healing from past trauma and abusive relationships. I think those parts made the book worth reading. Maybe I was over analyzing it because I just took a class on War and Peace through literature and I was hyper focusing on those aspects, but I thought it was meaningful to touch on the realities of war.

This book had absolutely no business being this long.
The problem is in the pacing, for sure. The very beginning was alright with Feyre doing some spying on the spring court but it was definitely more full than it needed to be. I wanted to see more interactions between Tamlin and Feyre during that time (although I did enjoy the tension between Feyre and Ianthe). There is some focus on Talmin throughout the story but I wanted to see more from him.

The romance in this book isn't exciting anymore because Feyre and Rhys are already an established couple so there's no "will they, won't they" tension. This is realistic in actual relationships, so I'm not mad about it, exactly. What I'm mad about is that this book is mostly incredibly boring until the last 20% or so. It's basically all talking about battle plans.

I don't know if I like this series. I am finding myself enjoying the segments with a lot of action, but there are so many slow parts between those that it becomes very tedious. This book should have been half the length.

A great wrap up

Truly sad to see this series go. A little Disney towards the end but that’s why we read books, to escape reality. The maturing of the characters and plot, was great and some lingering questions were answered. I came to really like this narrator but it was an adjustment for a bit there. Good read.

This one was more like fanfic than the others - every chapter ended on a cliffhanger, there were repeated words, too many characters and threads and deii ex machina and spiciness and
everyone gets a happy ending of sorts
but it was still enjoyable. This one was also more fantasy than the others, and that's not really my style of book, but it was still fun.
