WOW. This one had me going THROUGH IT. What a glorious heart-pounding whirlwind. Alliances lost and found, sweeping war across many lands and climates… this is what a true magical fantasy book should be. Of course I love the romance involved and all of the friendships sewn into the heart of this series, but ACOWAR was definitely heavy on intense battle and strategy and unbridled power, which really drew me in even deeper to that fantasy world where anything could happen. And anything DID happen!! While a little slow through the middle of the story after an incredibly cunning and sharp start, the last 200 pages more than made up for it. Edge of my seat with tears in my eyes, ready to slaughter Hybern like a well-trained Illyrian soldier. It was, in a word, EPIC.

LONG LIVE PRYTHIAN!!!!!

Due to who the author is and what they stand for, I will not be leaving a review. This set was purchased second hand and read for enjoyment.

A great wrap up

Truly sad to see this series go. A little Disney towards the end but that’s why we read books, to escape reality. The maturing of the characters and plot, was great and some lingering questions were answered. I came to really like this narrator but it was an adjustment for a bit there. Good read.

I’ve loved all the other books in this series. But this one in particular was very hard to keep up with. I felt it was super slow compared to the previous 2 books. Of course the last 200 pages really gripped me but not my fave

Sarah… you have mostly lost me! This book took me 100 years to finish and the ending only kind of made up for it. The amount of times i said to myself “that’s not how this works! That’s not how any of this works!” when reading this was too much. Like, I can’t say I’m an expert, but I just don’t think that’s how war would look, feel, or be. I don’t think that’s how immortal people would act. I don’t even think that’s how a regular person would act! Everything just felt strange to read, nothing felt natural and I could never account for anyone’s behavior. It was also just far too long, this could have been like a 200 page book. And as usual with this series, it was wild how inconsistent people’s abilities/magic/etc. were, I never knew where the boundaries of power were, and it was always surprising when they could suddenly do something that they said they couldn’t earlier.

I also am very much anti Rhys and Amren coming back from the dead. This could have been a poignant ending, showing the very real consequences of war. But right when the emotions of this loss hit (and it did make me gasp!) they were brought back to life, rendering basically the entire conflict of the novel meaningless. There was a lot of that in this book, where something was built up as scary or dangerous to immediately be shown as easy or not too bad. Like the whole Ouroboros story line was maddening, omg everyone goes crazy when they look in the mirror, except for Feyre, for which it was totally fine. Omg the war is going to kill us all! Except it won’t, we’re totally fine. Omg meeting the bone carver is super dangerous. Except it’s not, they’re all friends. Idk, if you’re going to make something sound deadly, scary, and dangerous, please show us some real risks. Otherwise it just doesn’t matter.

The only reason I’m going to continue with this series is because my book club will bully me otherwise, and because I am genuinely curious about Nesta’s character arc. Otherwise, I don’t think I’d be able to continue!

I did like this book a lot, not as much as the second one though. My main issue with it is that it could’ve been split into two normal sized books which could’ve been a lot easier to get through.

It's the war of the centuries that's been building for ages. The culmination of every thread, the realization of everything they (we!) have worked for.

So why didn't it shine?

The utter lackluster quality of this took me off guard. And honestly, I think it all comes down to the fact that SJM doesn't know how to write a battle scene. It seemed like everyone just stood there??? Very slow for a war.

Extremely disappointing, but still good.
