I'm beginning to realize Cogman describes a bit too much of the world. The result of this book was mostly describing an arch or what to do next. While I'm enjoying this series, it does teach me what not to do as a writer. Still enjoyable though.

These are awfully fun reads, without being so very light as to annoy. I'm not emotionally invested in the characters (I never gasp and think "oh no!"), it's more like watching an episode of TV where you're fairly sure the major actors will make it out alive for the next episode.

I was worried after the end of the first one that we'd be plunked back in the same alternate universe ... once you've introduced the concept of numerous alternate universes, what could be duller than staying in one place? ... so I was very pleased that we got to bounce around a few different locations.

One quibble: the main location was an alternate Venice, but it wasn't clear to me if they happened to be in Venice in an alternate world, or if the entirety of the world was alternate Venice, which are two very different thing, and I'd like to have known!

(Note: 5 stars = amazing, wonderful, 4 = very good book, 3 = decent read, 2 = disappointing, 1 = awful, just awful. I'm fairly good at picking for myself so end up with a lot of 4s). I feel a lot of readers automatically render any book they enjoy 5, but I grade on a curve!
