Honestly, just wasn’t the type of book I would like or recommend. Definitely need a strong stomach for certain parts. Seemed like the character was just excusing child abuse by saying it was art.

now that’s how you end a book!!! this book is a beautiful slow build. It rewards a the patient reader— it doesn’t give everything at once, rather it builds and as you get to know The Mother/Nightbitch more, you fall more in love with her and see yourself as her. the last chapter is brilliant and this is a book I will think about for a long time.

More like WhinyBitch.

This would have been a perfect short story that is metaphorical and deep and outright meaningful. However, as a novel, it just went on and on and on with nothing really happening except the mother being the most whiny and complaining bitch! So repetitive and dumb at times especially at the final part. Overall it did not need 200+ pages to say what it wanted to say.

And if I see the words “mother” “baby” “husband” “doggy” again I might commit a crime..

I really enjoyed Yoder’s writing style and the way she used different elements such as animals, gore, “dark” thoughts, and societal composure to develop this complicated MFC. She showcases how every woman is multifaceted and beneath all her layers is a person, or in this case, an “animal”, that wants to be cared for, to be heard, and to be free.

I really liked the beginning; it was a solid start. However, the further I read, the more tired (and slightly bored) I felt. Sadly, I just lost interest in a story and themes, which on paper–female rage, art, a female weredog, transformative magic–I should've thoroughly enjoyed. This book would have definitely benefited from a massive edit (i.e. cutting out many repetitive plot points) to turn it into a novella. Also, I didn't care that much for Nightbitch's child; he was too prominent a character.
SpoilerA moment of silence for the dead cat and bunnies. Was that really necessary, Yoder?
