These books have been the perfect escape. I love the dark academia murder mystery vibes.

This series could have and should have been one book and I couldn't bring myself to care enough about the mystery or characters or anything to keep reading

I am pausing this series here. I won't actually spoil anything but will mention why I'm taking a break and may not continue in a spoiler below. I know a few people who loved this series though, and, I really enjoyed the writing style and premise so I would try others from this author. And, who knows, I may end up back with this series in the future!

SpoilerI loved the premise! But it should not take 3+ books to figure out the mystery, even when accounting for teens solving the crime. I also found I couldn't get myself to come out of some of the ridiculousness of the details enough to enjoy the book. For example, generations millennial and below never have their phones set to ring, so having the character spying and then her phone ring identifying her just wouldn't happen! Make it a squeaky stair or something legit. I also find the timeline very weird - she's barely been at school when she's sent home for safety reasons only to be brought back within a couple of chapters? And, we only make it to Halloween by the end of the second book but the author writes as if we've been at school for ages (which as a teen, yes it feels that way, but the writing didn't really make this work for me). I'm very much in the minority on this one, so I'm going to take a break for now.
