If I remember correctly, I watched the movie prior to reading the book. I found both versions to be quite good; however, the ending of this book was such a shocker. I wasn't prepared for the book, which is interesting given that I had seen the movie. I needed to have tissues nearby for both; the story, no matter what medium, is a sad one.

I really liked this book. I listened to the audible.com version, narrated by a group of very talented performers, and that brought each character uniquely to life. As is usual with Piccoult, there are no easy answers to the hard topics she raises, the characters are believable, sympathetic people, and the plot twists are fairly impossible to foresee. By the end, I was having trouble getting myself to leave the car and this book behind to go into my house. Speaking as a lawyer, I also appreciate that her discussions of courts and attorneys are relatively realistic and plausible.

This would have been five stars if not for the horrible ending.

AMAZING. Please don’t let the movie ruin this book for you. The movie did this no justice whatsoever. The book is heartbreaking in so many ways while being heartwarming at the same time.

I thought it was a good book until the end when I felt a little like I had been duped. I don't mind a shocker that gives you that gut-wrenching feeling but this shocker was a bit cheap. I felt let down. I don't usually judge a book by its ending, but in this case, it made me look at the whole story as a big 'set-up'. All this being said, I did read it in one day and enjoyed every minute of it!
