Set in the turmoil of the late 1970's Libyan revolution this story chronicles a young boy trying to make sense of his fathers involvement in forming a democratic Libya and how it impacts his family and friends. This story is as relevant today with the recent political upheaval of Qaddafi as it was four decades ago when the colonel first came to power. An insight into a country's socialism as told by a young boy, an engaging and informative story.

Gripping. “A drowning person is so hungry for life they can easily take you down with them.” Pretty much sums it up.

While it was perilously close to the "Nancy's Coveted 5-star Award," it earned 4 1/2. Very good.

In the Country of Men traces the violent history of the Libyan Revolution under al-Gaddafi through the eyes of a nine year old boy, Suleiman. The juxtaposition of the naivety of youth with the sinister violent regime makes this a very unsettling read. Matar fills the text with beautiful prose and poetic descriptions. I do wonder if the conclusion of the book was a little too resolved - wartime regimens often leave a lot of loose ends.
