For me, this book ties with Going Postal as the best book Terry Pratchett has ever written. It is also one of the best books I have ever read, if not the best. You will not regret reading it.

It's incredible how any given book by [later] Pratchett is just so much better than most literature, whether 'genre' or 'mainstream'. I'm not sure whether I get so teary-eyed because of the anticipation of there not being more of his books at some point, or because they just hit the right button, but either way, I wish more authors gave me the impression of knowing people and caring about them the way Pratchett does.

I loved the scientific method descriptions, the stand on colonialism, the moral aspects of the novel. This book made me feel all warm inside.

Took me so long to read because I kept putting it off, but once I got started, it was hard to put down.

Giving this one a genre label is about impossible. Supernatural? Yes there's a bit of that. Adventure? Yes. History? Well if you count the "colonialism" aspect thought this happens in a parallel universe. So maybe sci-fi? Not really feeling it. Whatever it is, I loved it. There are characters that made me feel and want to cheer for them or string them up. There is witty dialogue and a feisty and intelligent female. Most of all, there are truths that make you think.
