It was weird reading a language barrier while all the text was in English, but it's a better choice than a British author inventing an Indigenous language. I think this is the first strictly Pratchett book I've read, and I really love his writing style. There's so much personality in each of his characters, and you can tell how much he cares about telling a story and getting the reader to think. About themself, their world, the implications in the book's world. I really felt Mau's growth from a scared boy doing what must be done, to a chief who knows to put his people first, even over tradition.

Somehow this delightful book escaped my notice until it turned up in a street library one day. It’s always fun to see a beloved author trying out some new ideas, and there’s some interesting parallel universe stuff going on here, but quite different to what he explored in the Long Earth series. This is much more about relationships, culture, survival and community, with a bit of world building thrown in.
