A short, sharp read that kept me guessing

The author did a wonderful job of capturing the character of a bullied and maligned youth. He is passionate about a subject, more so than his peers who only want to mess about. But, what begins as an unnerving coincidence soon takes a sinister turn. The entity haunting him makes the point that, given everything soldiers of the past fought and died for, future generations will not appreciate their sacrifice. It seems a little unfair that the one character in the story with an interest in history, and the only likeable character in the story, should be the one to pay the price.
The scenes where he encounters his antagonist were handled very well, with the set-pieces given great and creepy detail. And it has a suitably horrific ending. Great story.
