I received an eARC of this title through NetGalley in return for an honest review.

I thought this was such a good read. It did not go the way I thought it would which I think makes it even better. I loved how the characters went through some tough times and even had some friendship troubles all in one volume. I like when a graphic novel not only sets up a story, but keeps the reader interested in all that is going on. For me, that is the hardest part with starting a graphic novel series, I think this one pulls it off well.

The artwork is also nice. I liked the colors were made to show the blandness of town versus the vibrancy of the wilderness.

I recommend this book to anyone looking for a good story with magic and adventure.

Un premier tome plutôt sympa, même si l'histoire est un peu fumeuse ? Peut-être qu'il y aura plus d'explications dans les prochains tomes ! J'ai bien aimé tout le concept de lien avec le territoire et la nature :)

"That spark of energy inside you! It's the reward for facing the world with humility. For knowing there is still so much you do not know. That feeling...is the joy of understanding something new."

I think there's something about the graphic novel format that makes not revealing the backstory right away a bit difficult; in regular novels you can sort of expose the background mechanics of the world as the story progresses - it adds to the tension in a good way. With graphic novels, somehow this tension doesn't come across quite right, and for some reason always annoys me. That being said, not knowing who the Night Coats were (or what their deal was) didn't ruin this graphic novel for me. It helps knowing there will be sequels that likely will explain their treachery. Overall a compelling story I look forward to following

really appreciate that even though Alidade and Lewis kind of grew apart for a while, it wasn't because of some random miscommunication

Honestly don't understand how anybody isn't enjoying this??? It's practically pitch perfect middle grade - filled with heart, headstrong characters, and a dynamic I really enjoyed. Look forward to the next one in 2023!
