“the decolonization of the imagination is the most dangerous and subversive form there is: for it is where all other forms of decolonization are born. Once the imagination is unshackled, liberation is limitless.”

Empowering and thought-provoking. I recommend to Octavia Butler's admirers, activists, and everyone who enjoys a good “what if...” story.

Collections of short stories are always kinda hit or miss IMO.  Some of the stories I'd love, and for other's I'd get the themes and characters, but thought they were clusmily written. Definitely worth reading all of them though, since they're all so short, but that's my reasoning for the lower score.

Some of my favorites: the river, The Long Memory, Small and Bright, Hollow, Little Brown Mouse, Runway Blackout, Fire on the Mountain, Children who fly.

I've read several short stories from this anthology -- I'd definitely like to own this book one day and read through all of the stories, but unfortunately it's been difficult for me to sit down for long periods of time with short stories.

Excellent anthology full of powerful and unique stories. I really enjoyed 85% of them, and for a book with different authors on each story that's very satisfyingly.

Overall, I really enjoyed these. The first half is especially strong and I’m excited to read a bunch of these with my students. The second half fell off a bit, and some of the excerpts could have used more context.
