I won this book in a First Reads Giveaway and had no idea what to expect. To be honest, I didn't have very high expectations, but from the very first page I was hooked and couldn't put it down. The plot advanced at an appropriate pace, the characters were well developed, and I am already recommending this book to others. I'm not going to give it a perfect 5, but I'd give it 4.5 if I could. I can't wait to read Alice Hoffman's other novels now!

1911 was a rough year for NYC. Content was interesting. Didn't quite understand why we needed a FMC, MMC, and an omniscient narrator, but still an interesting storytelling vehicle.

This book was recommended to me by a friend that has similar taste in books. I've looked at Alice Hoffman books before because the covers are beautiful, but I've never read one. This was my first and it definitely won't be my last. Beautiful writing style and the visuals painted by her are wonderful.

Practically perfect. I enjoyed it greatly. I only knocked it down a bit on the point scale because the chapters are individually very long and also there were moment here and there where it slowed down. A solid read.

I love how magical Hoffman's books are written. The best part is the letter at the end. Mermaids, monsters and Mitts.
